There were exactly 69 dogs onboard, all from his shelter in the West Bank. Then came Jimmy, Carlos, Farouk, Zoe, all of whom Mr. Abu-Ghazalah had cared for at Daily Hugz, the rescue facility he set up in Asira ash-Shamaliya, outside his hometown, Nablus. The dogs were mostly abandoned, many were feral and a number of them had lost legs after being hit by cars. The shelter had been “like paradise,” Mr. Abu-Ghazalah said. But in December, as conditions in the West Bank deteriorated amid the Israel-Hamas war, he decided he could no longer keep it running.

The death toll in Gaza passed a somber milestone on Thursday as the local health ministry reported that more than 30,000 people had been killed in the war since Oct. 7. Still, the reported figure is staggering — roughly one person killed for every 73 Palestinians in Gaza, whose population is about 2.2 million. The figures provided by the Gazan health ministry do not distinguish between civilians and combatants. In addition to bearing the risk of being killed in strikes or fighting, Palestinians are living with the growing specter of famine and disease. The health ministry has said infants have died from dehydration and malnutrition in recent days.

Now, a new study offers evidence to suggest that theory might be plausible, according to a news release from New York University. … Our experiments could add to the understanding of how these yardangs form,” he said. More on the mysterious Great Sphinx originsWhile the Great Sphinx of Giza has its mysteries — what it originally looked like and why it was made — it is believed that the 66-foot-tall (20-meter-tall) statue was carved out of a single piece of limestone. “There is too much evidence of human intervention in the construction of the Great Sphinx to make the yardang theory feasible,” Ikram said. The New York University researchers said their results suggest that Sphinx-like structures can form under fairly commonplace conditions, but their findings don’t resolve the mysteries behind yardangs and the Great Sphinx.

Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

Protests took place across Egypt, including in Cairo, as Egyptians pushed for Palestinian rights and rallied in support of their government's stance on the conflict, according to live video footage by Al Qahera. The Egyptian state-run TV channel broadcasted demonstrations in nine governorates, as well as in several locations in the capital. They also chanted in support of President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, who has resisted the idea of allowing people from Gaza through the border to Egypt. Protests are planned elsewhere in the Middle East. Protests are also planned in Jordan.

As news of a deadly explosion in a Gaza hospital compound spread across the Palestinian enclave, doctors at the nearby Shuhada Al-Aqsa hospital wondered whether to evacuate staff, patients and the hundreds of people who had taken refuge there. “Where could we go? No place is safe now,” said Abdel Rahman Bassem, a 24-year-old intern. The doctors and patients remained.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi called for a de-escalation of the conflict and said his country would "protect the capabilities" of the Palestinian people, although he didn't offer specific measures. "I call on all parties to prioritize the voice of reason and exercise self-restraint to prevent the breaking out of fires which could burn everyone," he said in a speech from Cairo. "Egypt is ready to coordinate with all parties without conditions to achieve an end to the conflict."

PARIS, Oct 5 (Reuters) - The Mont Blanc, Western Europe's highest peak, has lost more than two metres (6.5 ft) in two years and shrunk to its lowest level since precise measurements started 22 years ago as warmer summers reduced snowpack size, researchers said on Thursday. She added this year's particularly low level was probably due to a lack of rain and a hot summer. When precise GNSS satellite measurements started in September 2001, the Mont Blanc stood at 4,010.40 metres. A view of the Mont Blanc mountain from Le Brevent, in Chamonix, France, June 14, 2022. Farouk Kadded at Leica Geosystems said that this year, for the first time since 2015 - when scientists started measurements in June too - Mont Blanc's snowpack in September had remained virtually unchanged from June.

Oil rigs are seen at Vaca Muerta shale oil and gas drilling, in the Patagonian province of Neuquen, Argentina January 21, 2019. He said oil and gas reserves are depleting at 5-7% annually, and output will decline if companies stop investing to replace them. The Canadian government has not finalised subsidies for projects to capture and sequester emissions and is developing a cap on oil and gas emissions. Not all oil companies are reducing spending on production. Greater oil production could provide the revenue to pursue net-zero aims, Rath said.

The feud became the longest between Iran and an Arab country in modern times. Khamenei’s recent comments come as Saudi Arabia normalizes ties with Iran after nearly eight years of a diplomatic freeze. Apart from Saudi Arabia and Iran, Egypt has reconciled with both Turkey and Qatar, and the Arab League last month welcomed Syria back as a member after more than a decade of isolation. Weight of historical symbolismAs the years passed by, Egypt and Iran only grew apart, with little desire to reconcile from either party. Most Arab states continue to reject recognition of Israel.

Amid a foreign currency crunch, Egypt has drawn down net foreign assets in the banking system by more than $40 billion in two years, partly used to prop up the pound. Reuters Graphics Reuters GraphicsReuters GraphicsFINDING FOREIGN FUNDSTwo of Egypt's main foreign currency streams, tourism and Suez Canal transit fees, have edged up. The hard currency squeeze has raised concerns about Egypt's ability to repay foreign debt. Those repayments to the IMF and foreign bond holders alone, worth about $4.5 billion, amount to more than half the annual $8 billion Egypt earns from the Suez Canal. Egypt's external loans leapt to $162.9 billion by December 2022 from under $40 billion in 2015, central bank data showed.

CAIRO—Struggling to buy food for her family to break their fast one recent evening this Ramadan, Noura Ayad took her three children for a meal provided by a local charity in the historic part of the capital. “We ran out of chicken on the 10th day,” said Ms. Ayad. Her family lives on her husband’s meager driver’s income, which is quickly shrinking, hit by Egypt’s soaring inflation and collapsing currency. “We’re hardly surviving this crisis.”

Fadel Dawod | Getty ImagesThe Egyptian pound has plunged almost 20% against the greenback since the start of the year — with some analysts predicting that the currency may still have room to plummet further. Egypt's pound currently ranks as the sixth worst performing currency since Jan. 1, extending a decline that saw it lose more than half its value during 2022. Egypt's embattled economyHowever, the economic woes plaguing the Middle East's most populous country means its pound still has a way to plummet, according to the experts. He expects Egypt's inflation to peak at around 36% in the third quarter, if there are no more devaluations.
Egypt has sharply devalued the currency three times since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 exposed vulnerabilities in the country's finances. But with each devaluation the central bank aimed to keep the currency steady afterwards, only for the black market and non-deliverable forwards to quickly push beyond the new rate. "No time like the present to align foreign exchange rates with fundamentals," Urmossy said, adding that the March 30 policy announcement was "one of the most anticipated events in the African Frontier space." And the black market shows the hard currency shortage that has plagued Egypt for more than a year persists. "Demand for foreign exchange continues to outstrip supply, providing the conditions for the parallel market to grow," said Farouk Soussa of Goldman Sachs.

REUTERS/Amr Abdallah Dalsh/File PhotoCAIRO, Jan 4 (Reuters) - The Egyptian pound weakened to 26.49 to the dollar on Wednesday, its biggest one-day move since the central bank allowed it to fall by 14.5% on Oct. 27, according Refinitiv Data. Currency flexibility has been a key demand by the International Monetary Fund, which approved a 46-month, $3 billion financial rescue package in October. read moreThe currency has weakened from 19.7 to the dollar in March. Black market currency dealers continued to buy dollars for 29 pounds each on the black market on Wednesday, even after the devaluation.
"The Egyptian pound will likely remain under pressure until more U.S. dollar inflows from GCC (Gulf nations) and committed foreign direct investment materialises," said Carla Slim at Standard Chartered Bank. Last month's IMF deal has provided some respite. ,"Egypt has got a high debt load and arguably it is more vulnerable even than Pakistan in terms of debt payments as a share of revenues," said Renaissance Capital's chief economist Charlie Robertson. "But the difference is, it has been proactive and been quick to go to the IMF," Robertson added, noting Egypt also has strong support from rich Gulf countries. Egypt's IMF negotiations dragged on for seven months and drove its second big devaluation of the year.
